Popular movies related to card games

Popular card games like rummy and poker have made frequent appearances in many Hollywood and Bollywood films. In fact, some movies have been named after popular card games too.

Gambler

This classic film stars superstar Dev Anand and Zaheeda. Released in 1971, the plot has Dev Anand in the role of Raja. After getting abandoned by his mother as a child, he is brought up by Master, a criminal who teaches Raja about playing cards. Master pays Raja a small amount of money as commission, but Raja has other plans. He learns everything about playing cards and ventures out solo. Using his skills in gambling, he becomes rich and even falls in love. But fate has other plans as he gets charged with the murder of Master. From then on, the movie revolves around the happenings in the courtroom where Raja is under trial. 

Teen Patti

While not commercially very successful, this film brought together two of the biggest superstars in the world – Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley. Released in 2010, this film follows the journey of an unsuccessful mathematician who tries to create a mathematical theory around probability. His theory does not find any supporters, so he tries to relate it with the game of cards known as Teen Patti. The events of the movie unfold and towards the end, he is able to successfully predict the results of Teen Patti based on his theory, thus proving himself as an able mathematician.

Casino

Considered by many to be the best card game based movie ever, this film was directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and released in 1995. The film starred Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci. Based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi, the film follows a Jewish American gambling expert who is asked to look after the day to day operations of a casino. The film explores his struggles and challenges in the day to day management of the casino, the involvement of the mafia and the breakdown of his relationships and stature with time.

Inspired by the true story of the MIT Blackjack team as referenced in Ben Mezrich’s book Bring Down The House, this film is a heist drama released in 2008. The story revolves around MIT’s Ben Campbell, a mathematics major who needs money desperately to pay his medical school fees. He teams up with a professor who trains a team of six students to become experts in blackjack. The team then goes to to play at casinos in Las Vegas and win large amounts of money. The film starred Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Bosworth, Liza Lapira, Jacob Pitts, Aaron Yoo, and Kieu Chinh and was a box office hit despite some controversies over the casting choices.

Rounders

This 1998 release stars Edward Norton and Matt Damon. The plot centers around two friends in debt who try to turn their fortunes around by playing and winning big in the game of poker. Due to the superstar cast and entertaining plot, this movie is a must watch even for those who do not have any interest in poker or any other card game. This movie was not commercially successful when it was released but went on to become a cult hit in later years.

Casino Royale

Casino Royale is one of those films that became a must watch the moment it was announced. A James Bond film featuring Daniel Craig, this movie was a box office success. The story revolves around Bond’s attempts to bankrupt a terror financier in a high stakes poker game.
